Station 16 Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Checked Out, a solo exhibition by American artist Mando Marie (b. 1981). Checked Out will highlight Mando Marie’s iconic Reading Girl series as well as several pieces combining vintage book covers, stencil work, and collage. The exhibition is focused primarily on the artist’s ongoing flirtation with books, book titles, and old book covers. The exhibition title, Checked Out, is therefore a play on words, evoking both the library term, and in turn, the colloquial expression for removing oneself from one’s current situation. This double meaning echoes the conflicting nature of Mando’s work; nostalgic yet contemporary, innocent yet brave.

The vernissage will be held on November 29th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Station 16 Gallery and the exhibition will run until December 22nd, 2018.

Mando Marie is an American born artist living now between Amsterdam and Portugal. She is known both for her large-scale stencil street art and her refined gallery work. She received her academic training at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. Her signature graphic work uses nostalgic storybook imagery and repetition to inform the compositions of her paintings. Her artwork straddles a line between comforting, nostalgic images and spooky dreamscapes.

The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art hosted a 2012 solo exhibition of Mando Marie’s work and noted that her signature figures, “have been lifted from the pages of a mid-twentieth century children’s book and have traded the protective home of childhood nostalgia for a slightly more adventurous and unsettling world somewhere between dream and reality.”
