About Office du Design

L’Office du Design is a small Montreal design and fabrication shop that started in July 2018. Principal Designer Matthew Dinsmore returned to his passion of design and sculpture, after working for many years in IT and data-center operations and management.

In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s Matthew was living in Toronto, designing and selling his lighting sculptures and op-art through a local popular King Street West venue. It was then that he was introduced, via a mutual friend and architect, to Christopher Nelson, partner at Canada’s famous Lighting Nelson and Garrett. During his stay at LNG, Matthew expanded and honed his custom-fabrication skills, working on unique and timeless pieces for the Canadian House of Commons, the Ontario Supreme Court, Casa Loma, the Windsor Arms Hotel, and the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology among many other clients.

Over the years, Matthew continued to expand his knowledge and expertise by exploring various materials, fabrication techniques, and design principles. His influences stem from many sources, notably from the grandfather of the Op-Art movement Victor Vasarely, to Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic architecture that focused on designing structures in harmony with humanity and its environment. This concept is one that aligns with his core design principle of using sustainable forestry products and environmentally friendly finishes, and of continually improving ways to minimize waste and environmental impact.
